Primož Krašovec - "Marxism and capitalism/neoliberalism"

School for Politics and Critique

RLS - SEE / Primož Krašovec - "Marxism and capitalism/neoliberalism"

The Institute of social sciences and humanities - Skopje announces the second seminar of the School for politics and critique with Primož Krašovec, which will be held on 22nd and 23rd of February 2014 at the premises of the Institute of social sciences and humanities - Skopje.

The presentation of the seminar by Primož Krašovec will focus on three main aspects of Marxism's continuing relevance as a critical social theory. Firstly, it will focus on the question why a critical social theory of a Marxist type is necessary at all. Far from being purely academic exercise, Marxist theory is indispensable since capitalist social relations are not transparent, especially when it comes to relations of social domination and in subordination, which operate under the surface of the egalitarian legal relations in a free and democratic capitalist societies. The theory of fetishism will be used to show how can relations of inequality and domination not only persist but be constitutional for the formally free and equal capitalist societies. Secondly, it will sketch basic social structure(s) of contemporary capitalism to demonstrate theoretical utility of Marxism even for contemporary capitalism, which is in its empirical manifestations far removed from capitalism of Marx's time. And lastly, it will present a critical assessment of neoliberalism as an ideology and (social, political and economic) practice, including a critique of those critiques of neoliberalism which use it as a pretense for capitulation to social-democratic positions or a nostalgia for Keynesian “golden age”.

Primož Krašovec is an assistant professor of sociology of culture at Faculty of arts, University of Ljubljana. His main research interests are: a Marxist theory of value, theory of fetishism and ideology, theories of the state and theory of social reproduction.
