Becoming a Mother on the Periphery
From socialism to a neo-liberal “transitional” regime of motherhood towards radical care practices
We bring to your attention new text prepared in uz)bu)))na))))’s workshop "Becoming a Mother on the Periphery: From Socialism to Neo-liberal 'Transitional' Regime of Motherhood toward Radical Care Practices". The text was written as a continuation of our efforts to introduce this important topic in current discussions and to point out the structural connections between motherhood and reproduction of capitalism, this time with a focus on the local context in Serbia. Researches show that the main victims of the crisis are those who care for children because the greatest burden for the survival fall on them in the moment when it becomes clear that the state and capitalism don't want to share anything with us. The current crisis is primarily a crisis of our own reproduction and therefore we believe that it is necessary to regain the capacity to make our own future and our lives, fighting for the public good, rebuilding the fractured social tissue, but also with the introduction of radical practice of care in social processes. Child care is not an issue concerning only mothers and biological parents, it is a political question which concerns all of us. The question of becoming a mother is the question of refusal to become what is expected from us and constant political work to change the established social relations, if we desire that new hoped-for society be established on equal opportunities for all, beyond the established distribution of labor and discriminatory and repressive regimes.
The text is published in the new edition Comrades Suggestion where we want to introduce tools for radical research and a collective reading of our lived reality.
We invite you to read the text, to criticize it, share it and publish it.
We are preparing "print your own booklet" PDF files version which will be available on the uz)bu))na))) website in next days.
